Mikhail Lermontov
All alone I tread the road I’ve taken...

All alone I tread the road I’ve taken;
Down a flinty path, through mist I walk.
Night is still. The desert heeds the Maker.
Star to star, the constellations talk.

Heaven is most solemn, truly graceful!
Earth is sleeping in an azure glow…
Why is it so hard and far too painful?
What is it I seek? What hurts me so?

I no longer see what life can promise;
Nothing of the past I wish I’d keep.
All I seek is freedom and true solace —
Thus to lose myself and go to sleep!

Not the chilly sleep a grave would warrant…
But the kind of everlasting sleep
When a lifeforce in the chest lay dormant,
And the chest still heaved with breathing deep;

When all day and night, my ears could cherish
One sweet voice that sang me of my love;
And an oak, its dark leaves without blemish,
Leaned to me and rustled from above.

Выхожу один я на дорогу;
