Anna Akhmatova
The Guest

Everything was normal. The snow was softly
scouring the dining-room window
in fine flurries. I hadn’t changed in any way,
was just my regular self. Some fellow
came up to me with an expectant look.

I asked, “Is there something I can get you?”
“Yes,” he replied, “become my partner in crime.”
I laughed, “I don’t think the future you’re predicting
would end well for either of us.”

Then he reached out and cooly touched the flowers
I’d just been adjusting in their vase.
He said, “These delicate petals
seem to kiss one’s fingers.
I wonder if your kisses would be as delicate.”

Then he saw, and couldn’t take his eyes off,
my wedding ring. His eyes lost all their luster.,
though not a muscle in his face betrayed
how annoying this enlightenment was.

I understood his malign satisfaction
as he decided with a still and inner violence
that I could make no worthwhile return for his attentions,
and that he didn’t so much want me anyway.
