Alexander Pushkin
To ***

I couldn’t forget the wondrous vision
When first you did appear to me —
As an elusive apparition,
As beauty’s genius, pure and free!

To haunting sadness I’d surrender,
To woes of hollow vanity,
But then I’d hear your voice so tender;
Sweet features in my dreams I’d see.

Years passed. The storms’ rebellious temper
Had forced my former dreams to flee,
And then no more did I remember
Your voice and features heavenly.

Far off, in gloomy isolation,
My tedious days weren’t swift enough —
No grace divine, no inspiration,
No tears of joy, no life, no love.

My soul has woken from submission:
Again, you have appeared to me
As an elusive apparition,
As beauty’s genius, pure and free.

Again, my heart, in exaltation,
Beats fast and reaches high above
For grace divine, and inspiration,
And tears of joy, and life, and love!

К ***
