Vladislav Khodasevich
Standing in Front of a Mirror

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita
[Midway on our journey through life]

I, I, I. What a weird, inexplicable word!
Is that really me/I, this odd guy?
Could my mama have loved this strange bird,
Going gray, sallow-grim, looking sly,
With a know-it-all gleam in one eye?

Is that I, the thin boy in Ostankino summers
Who danced at the balls in the gentryfolks’ manors,
And am I the one now who befuddles newcomers,
The parvenu poets who loathe my bad manners,
Who chafe at my spite and eschew the word-daggers?

Is it I who in midnight polemics and fights
Has spewed out his puerile and nimble panache,
The same one who later, when tragedy strikes,
When things get beleaguered, in hard times awash,
Holds his tongue or speaks only to quietly josh?

But that’s how it goes at the midpoint of life,
Wriggling your way down the pivotal path;
You first divagate left, then prevaricate right,
And then you come out in the bleak aftermath,
In a wasteland, at mercy to Gaia’s stark wrath.

Sad but true, not pursuit by a raging wildcat
Has chased me to Paris, to this hideous garret,
And no poet named Virgil cohabits my flat,
Only loneliness bleak and a life of scant merit,
And a truth-speaking mirror that saps my life’s spirit.

Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita.
