Alexander Pushkin
Winter’s evening

Dark with storm the sky is scowling,
Snowy whirlwinds spinning wild;
Now like savage beasts it’s howling,
Now it whimpers like a child.
Now around the old roof-thatching
Suddenly it roars again,
Like belated travelers tapping
Now its raps our windowpane.

In our tumbledown log-shanty
It’s dark and sorry day.
What’s the matter, dear old nanny,
Silent in your window-bay?
Has the storm-wind howling, rushing,
Tired you out, my friend, or tell,
Are you dozing with the buzzing?
Of your busy spinning wheel?

Let us drink, my kind old creature,
Friend of my youth’s unlucky day,
Drown our sorrows! Where’s the beaker?
Let our hearts be light and gay.
Sing about the bluebird flying
Safe beyond the seas to dwell,
Sing about the maiden rising,
Fetching water from the well.

Dark with storm the sky is scowling,
Snowy whirlwinds spinning wild,
Now like savage beasts it’s howling,
Now it whimpers like a child.
Let us drink, my kind old creature,
Friend of my youth’s unlucky day,
Drown our sorrows! Where’s the beaker?
Let our hearts be light and gay.

Вихри снежные крутя;

Тихо за морем жила;

Вихри снежные крутя;
