Anna Akhmatova
In memory of July 19, 1914

We grew older by a whole century, and
It took no more than an hour: The fleeting
Summer was already nearing the end,
The ploughed up body of the plains was seething.

Then, suddenly, the quiet road grew crazed,
Loud cries arose, and silver voices rattled…
I pleaded God, while covering my face,
To strike me dead before the start of battle.

From memory, a load no longer needed,
The shades of songs and passions disappeared.
All emptied – she – Almighty’s orders heeded
To be the grim book of calamity and fear.
