Alexander Vertinsky

Poems by Alexander Vertinsky

Vertinsky was a renowned popular singer with an extraordinary destiny, first as a performer in the cabarets of Petrograd and then with long years of popularity and wide travels in emigration beginning before the Revolution.

He returned to the Soviet Union during World War II and became a successful performer on the variety stage and in movies. He received the State Prize of the USSR in the field of art and literature. While his poetic output is not significant, it is interesting as a distinctive blend of elements from Aleksander Blok, Igor Severyanin, Nikolay Gumilev, and his own authentic poetic spark.
