Alexander Vertinsky
In The Moldavian Steppe

Silently the sleepy dray cart crawls
And, sighing, slides down the slope...
And sadly he gazes at the roads,
The crucified Christ of the wells.

How the wind blows in the Moldavian steppe!
How the ground sings underfoot!
And it's easy for me with my gypsy spirit,
Loving no one, to wander on!

How dear to me are all these pictures,
How familiar all I see here!
And two swallows, like high school girls,
Accompany me to the concert.

How the wind blows in the Moldavian steppe!
How the ground sings underfoot!
And it's easy for me with my gypsy spirit,
Loving no one, to wander on!

Softly I hear the distant call
On the green Dniester meadows.
And I recognize on the other shore
The hapless land of Russia.

And when the birch trees shed their leaves
And the din of the fields is stilled before snow .
Oh, how sweet, how painful, through my tears
To but glimpse my native land...
