A Plain Girl

This little girl stands out among her mates.
The look of ugly froglet fate has dealt her.
A hand-me-down sweater tucked in, helter-skelter;
Tight reddish curls spill out of her braids;
Her mouth wide, her teeth — a crooked chain;
Her little face pinched and extremely plain.

Two boys she knows cavort with brand new bikes —
Gifts from their fathers, these are sure winners.
The friends ride back and forth forgetting their dinners,
Allowing her to follow — if she likes —
And watch how spokes whir and chrome glimmers.
With trilling laughter and a happy smile
She joins the boys in their celebration,
Filled to the brim with second-hand elation.
Sincere joy without a trace of guile
Spills out of her heart in lavish outpouring.
She’s yet untouched by jealousy or spite.
What some consider tedious and boring,
She finds a bubbling fount of new delight.

Alas, the fateful day is drawing nearer
When inadvertently she glances in the mirror
And sees her homely face next to a pretty friend’s.
How bitterly she’ll mourn her broken dreams!
Yet I keep hoping her heart is stronger than it seems
And this is not how her story ends!
I keep believing that the pure ardent fire
That burns inside her, will in turn ignite
The agonies of her unfair plight —
And all her pain will vanish in the pyre!

So what if hers is not a lovely face?
She won’t excel in the enchantment lessons,
But she is blessed with innocence and grace,
Soft radiance imbues her very essence.
So what is beauty? And why does the human race
Keep up its worship, whether valid or misguided?
Is it a vessel holding empty space,
Or is it fire shimmering inside it?
