Flame, rope, the bullet and the axe
Like servants bowed to us and followed in our wake;
In every drop a torrent slept;
Great mountains thrust their peaks through every pebble;
In every twig snapped by a careless boot
Huge, black-armed forests rustled.
Injustice ate and drank with us,
The bells of churches pealed from force of habit,
Coins lost their weight and ringing sound,
The sight of corpses woke no fear in children.
Then was it that we learned new words,
Words bitter, beautiful and cruel.
Огонь, веревка, пуля и топор
Как слуги кланялись и шли за нами,
И в каждой капле спал потоп,
Сквозь малый камень прорастали горы,
И в прутике, раздавленном ногою,
Шумели чернорукие леса.
Неправда с нами ела и пила,
Колокола гудели по привычке,
Монеты вес утратили и звон,
И дети не пугались мертвецов...
Тогда впервые выучились мы
Словам прекрасным, горьким и жестоким.
