Childhood

As a child I loved
Honeysmelling meadows,
Withered grasses, thickets,
Ox horns in the grass.

Every dusty roadside shrub
Shouted: "It's a joke.
Dance around me,
And you'll see who I am!"

The autumn wind unruly.
Roaring past, broke off our game —
My heart beat more ecstatically,
I believed I would die

Not alone, but with friends.
With my coltsfoot and burdock;
Soon I guessed what lay
There behind the distant skies.

That’s why I relish stormy
Military pastimes, for
Human blood is no holier
Than the emerald juice of grasses.

И меж трав бычачьи рога.

Мне кричал: «Я шучу с тобой,
Обойди меня осторожно

Только, дикий ветер осенний,
Прошумев, прекращал игру, —
Сердце билось еще блаженней,
И я верил, что я умру

Не один, — с моими друзьями.
С мать-и-мачехой, с лопухом.
И за дальними небесами
Догадаюсь вдруг обо всем.

Я за то и люблю затеи
Грозовых военных забав,
Что людская кровь не святее
Изумрудного сока трав.
