Squeezing his black nose on the windowpane
the dog waits and waits in vain.
I bury my hand in his fur,
I too am waiting for her.
You remember, dog, there was a time
when there lived here a woman sublime.
When in the end was she to me?
Not as a wife or sister would be.
But sometimes, it seems, a daughter
who needs help from me, her father.
She has gone. You've settled down.
No other woman will be around.
* * *
My splendid dog, good at everything, I think:
What a pity it is that you don't drink.
