Looks like physics is in honor,
Looks like poetry is not.
It’s not dry figures that matter;
Universal law, that’s what.
It means that we failed in something.
Something,
which was ours to do!
It means that our cute iambics
Had weak wings and hardly flew.
Unlike Pegasus, our horses
Do not soar nor even trot...
That’s why physics is in honor,
That’s why poetry is not.
Any argument is pointless,
But even if there is one:
It is nothing so dismaying;
Rather it’s amusing fun
To observe the foam-like falling
Away of our rhymes and rhythms
And to watch how greatness
staidly
Retreats into logarithms.
Что-то физики в почете.
Что-то лирики в загоне.
Дело не в сухом расчете,
Дело в мировом законе.
Значит, что-то не раскрыли
Мы,
что следовало нам бы!
Значит, слабенькие крылья —
Наши сладенькие ямбы,
И в пегасовом полете
Не взлетают наши кони...
То-то физики в почете,
То-то лирики в загоне.
Это самоочевидно.
Спорить просто бесполезно.
Так что даже не обидно,
А скорее интересно
Наблюдать, как, словно пена,
Опадают наши рифмы
И величие
степенно
Отступает в логарифмы.
