A whole evening sitting at my desk
while the page stayed irredeemably white and blank.
The scent of mimosa on the breeze
reminds me of warm nights
in the south of France. Some large bird
glides through the moonlight.
I braided my hair for bed,
wound it snug, as though I planned
to wear it like that tomorrow.
I look through the window out at the sea,
at the beach sloping down to it.
I’m not sad any more.
Not even to want a kind word—
what a power that would be,
it seems to me more than human,
immunity to feeling!
I’m not sad, but in this famine of affection
I can’t find the energy to raise
my tired eyes when he says my name.
