Alexander Pushkin
Demons

Clouds are curly, clouds are swirly;
Ghostly moonshine, from disguise,
Lights the snowfall, fast and blurry;
Night’s as murky as the skies.
I am traveling alone,
As the bell goes din-din-don…
Through the open fields unknown,
‘Tis but scary to ride on!

“Coachman, faster!” – “Sir, we lost it,
Mighty stormy, I can’t see,
Poor old horses are exhausted,
Roads are buried, mercy me,
Not a trace; say what you care,
We’re off course. What shall we do?
Bet you ‘tis them demons there
Taking us in circles, too.

See that little devil: fooling,
Spitting, blowing, being mean;
See – the horse got crazy, pulling,
Heading straight for the ravine.
Now he plays a milepost, naughty,
Set to trick me in the dark;
Then he turns to being spotty,
Flashing like a dying spark.”

Clouds are curly, clouds are swirly;
Ghostly moonshine, from disguise,
Lights the snowfall, fast and blurry;
Night’s as murky as the skies.
Stale, we circle in the snow.
Suddenly the bell went numb
As the horses stood. “What now?”
“Who can tell! A wolf? A stump?”

Angry storm is sobbing, blowing,
Anxious horses snort in fear,
Just the demon’s eyes are glowing
As he bounces far and near.
Horses take off running, frightened,
Din-din-don, the bell is loud.
Mid the ghostly meadows whitened
I behold the spirit crowd:

Ugly, hideous, unending,
Under shifting moonlight drapes,
Like November leaves descending,
Whirl the demons of all shapes.
Countless! Herded to what merit?
Why the moaning in their pitch?
Is it to entomb a spirit?
Or to marry off a witch?

Clouds are curly, clouds are swirly;
Ghostly moonshine, from disguise,
Lights the snowfall, fast and blurry;
Night’s as murky as the skies.
Flocks of demons go on sweeping
Far beyond me, roll by roll,
By their bellowing and weeping
Breaking my unsettled soul…

Мчатся тучи, вьются тучи;
Освещает снег летучий;
Еду, еду в чистом поле;

Коням, барин, тяжело;
Вьюга мне слипает очи;
Все дороги занесло;
Хоть убей, следа не видно;

Дует, плюет на меня;
Одичалого коня;
Он торчал передо мной;

Мчатся тучи, вьются тучи;
Освещает снег летучий;
Сил нам нет кружиться доле;
Колокольчик вдруг умолк;

Вьюга злится, вьюга плачет;
Кони чуткие храпят;
Вот уж он далече скачет;
Лишь глаза во мгле горят;
Кони снова понеслися;

Мчатся тучи, вьются тучи;
Освещает снег летучий;
