The Stranger

At evening time above the restaurants
There hangs a fetid muffled cloud,
With cries of rowdy drunk belligerence
Holds sway the vernal rotten crowd.

A long way from the dusty passage,
The dachas lost in dull ennui,
A pretzel glints its leaden message
And childish whimper calls to me.

And every evening they are wandering,
Their bowler hats at rakish set,
With ladies promenading boundaries
The knowing blackguards there are met.

Above the lake the rowlocks tuneless
Resound as woman’s screech rings out,
Familiar crescent hovers heedless,
Its darkling face appears to pout.

And evening finds my only soulmate’s
Reflection in my tankard caught
And in its tart mysterious contents
Like me he’s stunned by chastened thought.

And near to the adjoining tables
The dopey waiters hang about,
And rabbit-eyed – the drink disables —
“In vino veritas!” drunks shout.

And every evening — no exception
(Or am I only lost in dreams?) —
A girlish figure’s silk reflection
In misty window dimly gleams.

And slowly through the drinkers trending,
Companionless and quite alone,
Her scented breath in mist condensing,
She takes her seat at window throne.

And ancient superstitions linger
In silk elasticated shifts,
Her hat with mourning’s feathered finger,
Her bracelets jammed on spindly wrists.

My eyes are drawn and strangely planted,
I look beyond her dismal veil,
And I behold a shore enchanted,
Enchanted, the horizon’s trail.

And deep the secrets thus confided,
The very sun becomes my own,
And all my spirit, so lop-sided
By endless wine is overthrown.

And overhanging ostrich feather
Mind stimulating tickle gives,
In searching deep blue eyes’ endeavour
On distant shore a flower lives.

In soul of mine there lies a treasure,
And I alone do hold its key!
O drunken sot, you have my measure!
The truth is found at wine’s decree.

«In vino veritas!»
