A song about grain

Here you have the cruelty that’s hardest.
Its sole sense is to give people pain.
And like cutting swans below the gullet,
The scythe cuts off heavy heads of grain.

Our field long has shaken with the shudder
That the usual August morning leaves.
Everywhere the bound, yellow cadavers:
Straw that’s lying tied-up into sheaves.

Placed, as if on catafalques, on wagons.
They are taken to the barn’s crypt there.
The driver respects the funeral custom
Barking like a deacon at the mare.

And then carefully and without anger
Heads down, on the earth, they’re spread about.
Come the threshers... From the skinny bodies
All their tiny bones are beaten out.

It does not occur to anybody
That the straw is also flesh and mind!
And those bones are pushed into the open —
Mouthed cannibalistic mill to grind.

From fermenting dough from that farina.
Heaps of fine foods - as an aftermath...
This is when the whitish poison enters
The stomach’s jug to lay eggs of wrath.

These rye-beatings colored in the surplus.
Reapers’ cruelty pressed into good juice,
It poisons the millstones of the innards
Of all those who eat the straw’s produce.

And the con-man, murderer and robber
Whistle like autumn across the plain...
Since — like cutting swans below the gullet —
The scythe cuts off heavy heads of grain.
