My friend Lucifer gave me five horses to ride
And a ring made of gold with a ruby ablaze,
So that down to the depth of great caves I could stride
Or behold heaven’s young, unforgettable gaze.
Horses snorted and stamped, and they bade me ride free,
Dashing over the Earth, all its vastness untold,
And I thought that the sun lit up only for me
Like the ruby so bright in the ring made of gold.
Then through each starry night and through each fiery day,
I went roaming and wondered what roaming would bring.
And I laughed watching powerful horses at play
And the glint of my golden, most beautiful ring.
There, at heights of the conscience lay madness and snow,
But I lashed at my horses to cause them to race.
To those heights of the conscience I forced them to go
And beheld there a maid with a sorrowful face.
I heard sonorous strings in her voice’s soft tune.
Strangely, question and answer converged in her glance,
So I handed the ring to the maid of the moon
For the fleeting, untrue shade of braids flung askance.
And while jeering at me, his contempt for me deep,
Into darkness friend Lucifer opened the doors,
And a sixth horse then Lucifer gave me to keep,
And Despair, forever, was the name of the horse.
