O had I known that it ends like this,
the day I sprang to my debut,
that lines and blood together kill.
Chokethroat, strike us through and through!
All joking with that cryptic thing
I should have bluntly set aside.
Far, far off was its origin,
doubtful, doubtful my first bite.
But old age — old age is Rome where
neither patter nor legerdemain
nor read-out speech redeems the player
cued for complete decease unfeigned.
Let feeling once dictate its line,
and drive its slave onto the stage —
then art is at an end, and life
stirs in the lungs of earth and fate.
