Anna Akhmatova
Sweetie, please don’t throw this letter away...

Sweetie, please don’t throw this letter away,
be friend enough to read it to the end,
don’t just crumple it up;
you need to know what it says.
I’d hate to be just some stranger
you met to forget.

Don’t furrow your angry brow and glare
down at the page. I love you, I’m yours.
I’m real, not some shepherdess or queen
you might read about in a romance,
nor am I now, as well you know,
some nun.

I’m as real as my dull-colored workaday dress,
as my shoes with their worn-down heels;
but just as when I first felt
the fire, when you held me close—
I’ve still got the same fear
in my so-wide eyes.

Please, don’t crumple up my letter.
it doesn’t ask you to feel bad
about your tender lies—
just that your read it and keep it
if only in the very bottom
of your beat-up knapsack.
