Osip Mandelshtam
Lather of lassitude round the lips again...

Lather of lassitude round the lips again.
Ploughing the waves there furiously swims the Bull.
Snorting, not fond of rowing, a lady's man.
Hard is the cargo, he's labouring to the full.

Time and again there jumps up a dolphin's wheel
Or a sea urchin gives them a thorny peck.
Soft hands of Europe, take all that you will.
Is there a more yearning joke for the bullish neck?

Plenteous sea is boiling all over the place.
Europe is scared feeling the mighty leaps.
She must be awed by the oil glamour of waves.
Oh, doesn't she want to slip down the corny steeps.

She would be happy to hear the rowlock's squeak,
See a broad deck full of sheep driven close by long raws,
Glimpses of fish... But so tremulous, pale and meek
Carried she is by the rower without oars.
