The face of the horse

Animals never sleep. At night when it’s dark
They stand like a stone wall over the world.

A cow s sloping head has smooth horns
And makes noise in the straw; holding
Primaeval cheekbones separate,
The heavy stony forehead presses down
To inarticulate eyes
That barely can roll in circles.

But the face of a horse is sharp and fine.
He hears the talk of leaf and stone.
He listens! He knows the cries of animals,
From the ragged woods, the nightingale s call.

And being so wise, whom should he tell
All the miraculous things he knows?
The night is deep, constellations
Are lifting over the dark skyline.
And the horse is calmly standing guard,
The wind rustling his silky hair,
Each of his eyes like a huge burning world,
His mane spread — royal purple.

And it a man could see
The magic face of a horse
He would rip out his own silly tongue
To give to the horse. The magic horse
Is the one who really deserves a tongue!

Then we would hear words.
Words as big as apples, thick
As honey or curds.
Words that have the thrust of fire,
That Hy into the soul and there make light,
Like fire shining on the wretched objects
Of some poor hut. Words without death,
Words that let us sing.
But now the stable is empty
And the trees can no longer be seen.
Morning, the miser, has covered up the mountains
And opened the fields for work.
The horse, from his cage of shafts.
Drawing a covered cart.
Looks with the eyes of a prisoner
At the mysterious, unmoving earth.
