The tram that lost its way

The street was strange. Things made me wonder:
The sudden croaking of crows in the sky,
Then sounds of lutes, and distant thunder —
And then the tram was rushing by.

Somehow I jumped upon its platform
While the tram continued to rush and sway,
Leaving above a brilliant pathway
That remained undimmed in the light of day.

With a roar, like a tempest, dark and damned,
It was lost in the chasm of time...
Driver, you must stop the tram,
Driver, stop at once!

Too late. We rounded the city wall,
We cut through a grove of palms,
We crossed three bridges, three rivers in all —
The Neva, the Seine, and the Nile.

For an instant there flashed in the window frame
And threw us a searching stare
The bearded old beggar, of course the same
Who died in Beirut a year before.

Where am I? With languorous trepidation,
“Look over there” — my heartbeats reply:
“There are tickets at yonder railway station
To Spiritual India — for all to buy.”

A signpost. Its blood-filled letters declare:
“Greengrocer’s Shop.” I know that instead
Of cabbages, carrots, and similar fare,
They sell human heads, cut off and dead.

Mine, too, was cut off. The butcher was dressed
In red shirt, and looked like an ox.
He put my head among the rest,
Here, on the floor of the slippery box.

And still, in that alley on a lawn of gray grass,
Stands the house with three windows, and a wooden fence...
Driver, you must stop the tram,
Driver, stop at once!

Masha, you lived here and sang for joy,
You wove me a carpet, my promised bride.
Where is your body now, where is your voice?
Can it be true that you have died?

Oh, how you suffered and moaned in your chamber,
While I, in the powdered wig and with chain,
Was being presented to the empress...
We never saw each other again.

Now I see: our freedom is only
Of light rushing in from beyond and far;
People and spirits wait at the entrance
To the zoo of planets and stars.

And now that sweet wind which I know and love
Brings to me, flying across the bridge,
The Horseman’s hand in the iron glove
And two raised hooves of his steed.

The spire of St. Isaac’s is cut into heaven
As a faithful stronghold of orthodox creed,
In there will be sung the thanksgiving service
For Masha’s recovery, and a dirge for me.

And yet, the heart is forever tragic,
It is hard to breathe, and it hurts to live...
Masha, I never did imagine
That one can love and grieve like this.
