Alexander Pushkin
Madonna

Not with arrays of artwork by painters of old
I’ve always keenly wished to decorate my dwelling,
So that a pious guest would find it more compelling
To hear important views of connoisseurs unfold.

One painting I have wished to be a viewer of
Inside my plain retreat where toils are slow and even,
One canvas, whence at me as from the clouds above
The Holiest Mother and Our Savior in heaven —

She with sublimity and he with wisdom — gaze
Exuding meekness, in their glory and in rays,
Alone, no angels, underneath the palm of Zion.

The Maker granted all I wished so humbly — hence
He gave me you, Madonna, you, to be my icon,
A paragon of pure charm in its most pure sense.
