The second disturbing digression

OK, it has happened. Your cranes have returned.
The air of hunting is filling your sheets.
Your powder's dry in your powder-horns.
Oh, well, this is great!

And even the stars play in favor of you,
and all constellations play into your hands,
in daring thoughts you're a neighbour to gods —
well, 't may be so.

But nevertheless, let us look and decide
what's it that inflates you with passion and pride?
The fact that you're able to rhyme and to write
words on paper?

Your flair for intricate verbal designs?
Your knack in arranging and stringing the lines,
one over the next, making them interwine
by similar endings?

For instance, instead of the rhyme "sun" and "fun",
you nowadays would prefer "sun" and "swan" —
you think that it shows your skill getting on,
your mastery progress,

as if any word, any rhyme that you choose
could lessen th’amount of vice and abuse,
could save anyone from a bullet, a noose,
at least one person?

And haven't you thought, when composing a verse,
that it's chickens’ play that is not worth a curse, —
a bauble, a trifle, a trinket — a verse —
just words on paper?

And don't you, at times, see it all in this way:
that you're like a kiddie immersed in a play,
you play while the world is being ruined by plague,
by plague and fire?

That all of your rhymes — they are gewgaw, Dutch gold,
your iamb and trochee are the cap and bells,
your strophes are gamins that rattle along
a funeral train?

OK, now contest all these question marks,
deflate and demolish, refute, controvert,
laugh out of court, and then grind to the dust,
tear to tatters...

But still you would hardly avoid this motif
of doubt, uncertainty and disbelief,
not now, perhaps, but sometime, while you live —
you must go through...
