Pulled from its ancient sheathe, ’tis as it was of yore,
As keen of blade and sharp-see how it gleams and glitters!
Bards join the worlds of men when tempests start to roar,
For song and storm are faithful sisters.
When all did bow their necks, of strength and courage bled,
And meekly chewed the cud, sick of this weary diet,
To times and ages past, a dusty land I fled
Of mystery and graveyard quiet.
How hated I a life so wretched and so mean,
So utterly bereft of beauty, thought and vision.
The very battle calls were those of slaves and seemed
To merit only cold derision.
But at the trumpet’s blow I start awake — the winged
Flags spreading overhead, is’t not to me they beckon! —
And loudly make reply, and, bold, the battle sing,
And thunder’s mighty roarings echo.
О poetry’s faithful blade! As in a day gone by
You run with crackling flame... Far do I no more wander
But haste to join the throng. Know this: a bard am I,

Он вырван из ножен и блещет вам в глаза,
Как и в былые дни, отточенный и острый.
Поэт всегда с людьми, когда шумит гроза,
И песня с бурей вечно сёстры.
Когда не видел я ни дерзости ни сил,
Когда все под ярмом клонили молча выи,
Я уходил в страну молчанья и могил,
В века загадочно былые.
Как ненавидел я всей этой жизни строй,
Позорно-мелочный, неправый, некрасивый,
Но я на зов к борьбе лишь хохотал порой,
Не веря в робкие призывы.
Но чуть заслышал я заветный зов трубы,
Едва раскинулись огнистые знамёна,
Я — отзыв вам кричу, я — песенник борьбы,
Я вторю грому с небосклона.
Кинжал поэзии! Кровавый молний свет,
Как прежде, пробежал по этой верной стали
И снова я с людьми, — затем что я поэт.
Затем что молнии сверкали.
