Summer night in the North

At the nameless country station
From the coast not far away
Gypsy girls of Finnish native
Boarded one June`s night our train.

Although Romanies were blond,
The vulgar tongue gave them away,
Wool shawls, over shoulders worn,
Strings of beads of colored jade.

Glittering with chains and earrings,
Wearing shirts with clashing colors
Gypsy men then there appeared,
Half-bent smoking pipes in mouths.

From gypsy wedding or from fete
This nomad family`d arrived.
Romany ladies rustled skirts
And their husbands puffed at pipes.

A lean gray-haired gypsy man
Drew springy bow across the strings,
The guitar in a young girl`s hands
Accompanied his old violin.

All that was in the midnight sun
The Mother Earth could get no rest.
The red dawn burned the eastern sky,
The full moon drifted in the west.

This very gypsy night, it chanced
That those who wandered in the train
Were fortunetellers and big dancers
From the ancient fairyland.

It smelled of both wormwood and mint,
And with the scent of flowers bloom
Gusts of the balmy summer wind
The train entirely perfumed.
