These spells are austere —
Their harmony is deep, their calm is high;
Far from the starry Lyra in the sky
I have set up my Lares here.

By the well-washed niche where they stand,
At the sunset hour, I listen;
I hear my Penates then,
Constant rhapsody without sound.

How trivial are the fates
And how timid the laws they rule,
These bodies carefully tooled
And the cold of these fragile shapes.

One need not offer other gods prayer;
These are your equals — you may
In a cautious and gentle way
Even shift them here and there.

Есть целомудренные чары:
Высокий лад, глубокий мир;
Далеко от эфирных лир
Мной установленные лары.

У тщательно обмытых ниш,
В часы внимательных закатов,
Я слушаю моих пенатов
Всегда восторженную тишь.

Какой игрушечный удел,
Какие робкие законы
Приказывает торс точеный
И холод этих хрупких тел!

Иных богов не надо славить:
Они как равные с тобой!
И, осторожною рукой,
Позволено их переставить.
