Nikolay Gumilev
Possessed

The Moon is like the round shield
Of a hero slain decades ago.
My heart is sick with a vague guilt
And of presentiments aglow.

Through a smocky medow, and field,
And a deep ocean, a cruel foe,
With th' tilted forwars spear and shield,
Steals slowly up my monster woe.

Excited, like a challenged knight,
I grab the bridle of my mare
And ride her hard in sea of nihgt
To meet and fight this cryptic mare.

In vain! Our battle in the dark
Forever will remain unknown.
He'll win, because he always does,
And leaves me in the marshy slough.

The night will gush into my eyes...
I'll be knocked out at full tilt,
Ready to go to Paradise
Or to the Hell, I'll fade and wilt.

And falling down on the grass,
Being tightly in my armor squeezed,
As always, for the "coup de grace"
I will be begging, but released.

As usual, I'll only hear
Some champing steps across the bog.
He will pass by and disappear
In heavy mists, in the light smoke.

I'll get up with the dawn, all right,
And girls, in th' wreaths made of spring flowers,
Will murmur «What a weird knight,
Whose soul is teased by cryptic powers.»
