Elongated, sturdy ellipse,
A velvet robe embraces
My youthful grandmother! — Your haughty lips.
Who’d kiss them, in years and places?
Pallid fingers that time and again
Played Bach in a royal palace
Icy forehead, an indigo vein,
Silvery shiny necklace.
Straight, and dark, your demanding eyes,
Defiant and strong as a buttress.
Youthful maidens don’t look like ice
Who are you, my young ancestress?
Your opportunities — how much were they worth?
And un-opportunities missed?
Swollen by the voracious graveyard’s earth,
Were your twenty years — a bliss?
The day was innocent, windy and fresh
The stars were gloomy and cold.
Grandmother! This rebellious heart of mine,
Is it your gift to my soul?
