I asked of the scattering wind:
How can I be young always? I spoke,
And the playing wind fluttered the answer:
Be airy like wind and like smoke.
I asked the herculean sea:
What’s the great law of life that you’ve found?
And the resonant sea roared, replying:
Be like me — always mighty with sound.
I asked the celestial, hot sun:
To flash brighter than dawn... what to learn?
And the high, aloof sun gave no answer...
But my soul heard and said to me: Burn!

Мне ответил играющий Ветер:
«Будь воздушным, как ветер, как дым!»
Я спросил у могучего Моря,
В чём великий завет бытия.
Мне ответило звучное Море:
«Будь всегда полнозвучным, как я!»
Я спросил у высокого Солнца,
Как мне вспыхнуть светлее зари.
Ничего не ответило Солнце,
Но душа услыхала: «Гори!»
