Ivan Turgenev
Autumn

As a sad look I fancy autumn.
On a serene and misty day
To woods I often choose my way
And gratified there stay
Alone in pleasant mood begotten.
Beneath a pine in a land of needles,
While tasting lazily a berry,
I muse on matters sad and merry
And listen to woodpeckers’ whistles.
The grass is withered, a cool brightness
Over the leaves is calmly spread,
And in a forest pleasant quietness
I watch the pine tops overhead.
What memories will I recover?
What dreams will be inspired with?
The giant pines are bending over
To tell their tales in thoughtfulness.
But gusts of wind as hordes of birds
The trees will suddenly arouse
And with increasing gale will burst
Impatiently high flied up crowns.
