Iambs

Oh, how often I feel the burden I have hoarded
Of smudged, anemic days and many poisoned nights!
You, cards, docs anything exist that’s more attractive
And at the same time more banal and full of frights!

But you are frightful, too, with a hangover’s frailty,
Preferred before all things: love, science, poetry.
What sordid hands I have grasped in a friendly handshake!
What I’ve agreed with!.. Come! The deck waits, restlessly.

The green cloth, malachite-like color of the mire —
The ace of clubs is strewed with ashes — broken chalk...
Just think: on the eve of the guillotine, a victim
Is drugged by cards even while in the dungeon’s lock.
