The tune becomes a flower...

The tune becomes a flower,
Unfolding, then shedding its petals.
It turns itself into sand and wind,
Flame-crazed, like a moth in spring,
Like the willow's branches, dipping into the water.

A thousand years pass in an instant,
And the tune transforms itself into
A steady game, the shine of epaulettes,
Breeches, a Hussar's tunic, "Your Honor",
A cornet of guards — and why not?

Fog ... Taman1 ... The wilderness hears God.
— How far off tomorrow is!
And Lermontov sets out along the road
With a jingling of silver spurs.

___
1. A little town on the Black Sea described by Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) as the "most wretched" site of a young officer's almost fatal misadventure with a beautiful seductress and with smugglers, in the story by the same name from the novel A Hero of Our Times.
