Dwarf Birches

To V. Novokshenov

Dwarf birches are what you and I are.
We sit like splinters tight together
beneath the nail of frosty finger.

And so the Khanate, permafrosted,
in crudeness beats all it’s accosted.
It’s not ashamed to us embarrass —
does that surprise you, trees of Paris?

And haughty palm trees, does it pain you
to see the squalor we have come to?
And are you sad, O guards of fashion
to see our Quasimodo-passion?

From sunny place you seem impressed by
our civic consciences and bravery,
and now you earnestly are sending
to us encouragement unbending.

O forest friends, in your opinion
we are not of lame trees’ dominion —
we may be ugly but we’re verdant
though icebound we are forward-fervent.

So thanks a lot. We’ll manage even
to go on standing under heaven,
although we would be crushed to pieces
if your so needed backing ceases,

Of course, you are less regimented,
but stronger roots keep us contented.
To life in Paris we’re not fated
but here we are appreciated.

We are dwarf birches — that’s the reason
we slyly pose in growing season,
but all of this is just deception.
Reserve distorts our foes’ perception.

Our faith is that, although bent double,
this permafrost’s not lasting trouble,
that melting it will shift this ordure
and we will snatch the right to order.

But if the climate changes, won’t then
our branches of a sudden take on
the form of other, freer, tendrils?
But we are used to being cripples.

And we’re tormented, so tormented,
and by the cold we’re bended, bended.
But we dig deep, just like a splinter —
dwarf birches are we. This is winter.
