Bulat Okudzhava
A musician, near a forest tree, is trying out a waltz...

A musician, near a forest tree, is trying out a waltz.
He is trying out a waltz, first passionate, then dimming.
And as far as I'm concerned, I look at you like I did once,
And like before, you look at him, and he just looks out dreaming.

Music plays for an entire age. Our long picnic’s all but through.
That same picnic where they care and hurt, lovingly or wrongly,
The musician’s lips are pressed to his flute. I’d press mine to you.
But you, it seems, are that one spring that would not quench a longing.

And the musician plays his waltz. And he can neither see nor sense.
He just stands there, and he has his shoulders leaning on a birch tree.
And the birch tree’s branches grow instead of fingers on his hands,
And his birch-like-colored eyes tell us of sadness and of virtue.

And right in front there is a pine, all in an eagerness for spring.
And the musician’s growing deeper... Sounds of waltz are moving…
And his skinny legs beneath the ground are like the roots of that pine tree —
They interweave together tightly and they cannot come unwoven.

Music plays for an entire age. Our affair has all but passed.
It tied itself into a knot, it’s burning — but still staying...
Please already, let us all calm down! Let us all go home at last!..
But you are looking back at him... And the musician's playing.
