The Names of Georgian Women

Far off at sea the sails were roving.
Oblivious to the heat, plane-trees
Unfolded their flowers slowly
And lost them to November breezes.

I n the old park the branches crowded
Over a bench with whitewashed planes;
The smell of grapes seemed like a cloud
Embracing Georgian women's names.

Their sounds streamed in a soft babble
Of gentle undulating waves
They glided with a swan's smooth paddle
Curving its neck with curious grace.

There was Lamara, throwing pebbles
Her tiny slippers in the brine;
Her smiling lips were like rose petals
Stained by the sweetness of red wine.

The cascade of Medea's hair
Was braided in the waterfall
And sparkles glittered in the air
Till one by one the drops would fall.

The smell of blooming oleanders
Imbibing like a butterfly,
The fragrant name of Ariadne
Dissolved somewhere in the sky.

The pier, clinging to the water
Leaned lightly on the wooden piles;
"Susana!" echoed from a window
"Natella!" came the crisp reply.
