Music lessons

Marina, how I love to know that
like everyone else, like me –
who cannot speak now through my frozen throat
because to speak of it is like swallowing ice –
to know that you, a creature of light! of snow!
were like the rest of us, given lessons in music.
And there was a waste of teaching, almost as if
to the sound of laughter and tears among
the gods, a candle had been given rules for glowing.
You and the piano, equally dark
creatures, could not get on together.
Two perfect circles, you touched each other’s
foreign language, remotely as deaf mutes.
Sombrely you were drawn together in
that insoluble and hostile encounter:
a piano and you!
Stubborn and silent,
the voice of music still weak in you both.
Marina, defenceless child, that decided
the matter.
What is a piano? It is only
silent and a prisoner until some
friend puts a finger on C sharp.
But you were alone. There was no help for you.
Your music had to be learnt with difficulty:
without troubling the source of your pain,
you had to open yourself to bleed in sound.
Marina, C! C! for childhood,
doh, your destiny! Doh! Re! of speech,
doh, for everything that comes afterwards!
As we both leant forward our foreheads in
that universal pose before the piano together,
like you! like you! I grasped the stool, that
merry-go-round of a worthless pedagogue,
to try unwinding the same equator
which has already torn away your beret
and now lies whistling around your head.
Marina, the intention of all this springs from
the beauty of uttering just once and perfectly, the cry:
I am like you! like you! I wanted to
shout that out with jot – but instead, I weep.
