On a scrap of paper then I scribbled down the long address,
But I couldn’t say goodbye — the sheet I held in fingers’ press.
Sunbeams stretched upon the cobbles. On her lashes and her fur
Hat and steel-grey gloves wet snow began to fall in spreading blur.
Then a man appeared to light the lamps. He lit one where we stood,
And it whistled and it stuttered, like a shepherd’s cornet would.
There began inconsequential awkward chatter, anyhow:
“Down’s less soft, and shot is coarser…” We are ten years older now.
Like a fool, I’ve lost that paper, and the name’s forgotten too,
Since that time I’ve loved another and then, bitter, wished adieu:
Now I pace. The roof is dripping: there’s the house, I’m at the gates,
And above the niche the light reveals the names — I scan the plates.
There are special kinds of gate and special kinds of house as well,
There’s a special sign that’s just like youth itself — it casts its spell.
