Arseny Tarkovsky
Night Rain

And then the rain began to spatter,
From light into the shade it flew.
And our first meeting, for that matter,
Was on a rainy evening too.

And only misty rainbow’s glowing
From shimmer of the lamps above
An inkling to you there was showing
Of pressing closeness of my love,

That summer had already ended,
That life was drear, yet filled with mirth,
That your own life was now suspended
And few were living on the earth.

Like tears, the raindrops as they spattered
Shone as they beat your face’s drum,
And still the madness and the chatter
Seemed more than we might overcome.

I hear your voice’s distant murmur,
And we are helpless in our plight,
And all night long the rain beats firmer
As then I paced through all the night.
