Alexander Blok
On the islands

Again the snow-clogged pillars,
The Elagin Bridge1
And the voice of a woman in love,
The crunch of sand, the horse’s snort.

Two shadows, fused by a kiss, fly
By wrapped up in a bearskin rug,
But with this new captive lover
I am neither pining nor jealous.

It is a sad delight to know
That love, like snow, just passes.
O must we, must we really vow
Old-fashioned “faithfulness forever”?

She’s not the first I have caressed,
And I in my strict clarity
Neither play at submissiveness,
Nor make demands on her domains.

Precise as a geometer,
I count in silence when we pass
The bridges, chapels, and the wind’s
Force, the low islands’ emptiness.

I honor ceremony: lightly
To ease the bearskin rug in flight,
One arm round a slender waist, to scheme,
And fly on through darkness and through snow,

And to remember narrow boots,
Falling in love with cold furs...
You see, my breast will not be bared
To meet a dueling suitor’s sword.

Nor does her mother, far away, alarmed
Wait for her with a candle at the door,
Nor wretched husband seethe
Jealously behind heavy shutters.

No matter how much last night shines,
How much tonight calls, it is all
The mere continuation of a dance,
A movement from the light into the dark...
