In the dunes

I do not like the empty vocabulary
Of love, its shabby phrases — “You’re mine,” “Yours,”
“I love you,” or “I’m yours forever.”
I do not like slavery. With a free glance
I look into a lovely woman’s eye,
And say, “Tonight, yes. But tomorrow
Is a new and splendid day. Come.
Triumphal passion, take me,
For tomorrow I go out and sing.”

My soul is simple. The salt wind,
Off the sea, the resinous breath of pines
Have been its food. It bears the marks
That scar my weather-beaten face.
And I am beautiful, with the beggarly beauty
Of the shifting dunes and the northern seas.
So thought I, wandering along the Finland
Border, overhearing the somber talk
Of the unshaven, green-eyed Finns.
Silence descended. At the platform
The waiting train got up steam,
And the Russian customs guard
Sighed lazily on the sandy
Bluff where the railway bed ended
There another country opened up.
And the homeless Russian church stared
Into the alien unknown land.

So thought I. And then she came
And rose up on the slope of the embankment. Her eyes
Were red from sun and sand,
And her hair, resinous as the pines,
Fell to her shoulders in blue shimmerings.
She had arrived. Her animal glance crossed
With my animal glance. She laughed
A high-pitched laugh. She threw
A tuft of turf at me, and a handful
Of golden sand. Then she leapt up
And with a bound vanished down the slope...
I chased her a long way. I scratched
My face on pine needles, bloodied my hands,
And tore my clothes. I shouted and chased
Her, like an animal, shouted again, and called,
And my impassioned voice was like a horn.
She left a light trail
In the shifting dunes, and disappeared in the pines.
As the night wreathed among them.
And I lay, panting from the chase,
Alone, in the sand. In my flaming eyes
She runs still, still laughing —
Her dress laughing, billowing with the chase.
I lie and think: “Tonight,
And tomorrow night. I’ll not leave here
Until I’ve tracked her down, like a beast
And, with my voice ringing out like a horn,
Have barred her way. And said:
‘My own! My own!’ And let her, answering, cry:
‘Yours! I’m yours.’”
