Don’t you wake her at dawn, let her rest...

Don’t you wake her at dawn, let her rest;
Dawn’s the time when sweet dreaming she seeks.
Morning breathes its soft light on her chest —
In the dimples it hides of her cheeks.

But her pillow all night was so hot,
And as hot the laborious dream;
Her black plaits down the shoulders have dropped
On both sides — like a ribbon they stream.

Just last night by the window she sat
Long, long time with her eyes turned up high,
Watching clouds moving this way and that,
As the moon played its game gliding by.

The more brightly the moon chose to play,
And more loudly a nightingale sang,
The more sadly her face turned to gray,
And her heart with more suffering rang.

That is why on her young aching chest,
On her cheeks, morning light hotly streaks;
Don’t you wake her, please don’t, let her rest;
Dawn’s the time when sweet dreaming she seeks!

На заре она сладко так спит;
