Indifference

Now he's different when he comes.
He assumes a slave-like guise.
And bows down so very humbly,
Sits down quietly in the corner,
At a distance from me, on the floor,
Snickering insincerely.

He whispers: "I dropped by, my love,
Just like that, just to have a look.
I won't bother you — I wouldn't dare.
I'll sit for a while in my corner.
If you're tired, I shall amuse you,
I can do a whole lot of tricks.

Want to look into your fellow men?
You'll just die, it's so screamingly funny!
Name me anyone you like,
Point out anyone to me,
And I'll change you into him
Just like that, on my word of honor,

For an instant, but not forever,
So you'll stand in his shoes for a while.
If you're in them for only a moment,
You will know what is truth, what is lies.
You will see through him — through and through.
Once you do, you won't soon forget.

What's the matter with you? Chat with me.
It's no fun? Now wait just a minute,
I know some other tricks too."
Thus he whispered and babbled in his corner,
Wretched, puny, he sat on the floor,
Wringing his thin little hands.

And a secret fear consumed him:
Of my answer. He waited and withered,
Promising me he'd be good.
But this time I did not raise my eyes
From my work to look at him.
I stayed silent and was indifferent.

Go away or stay here with me;
Go ahead and wiggle, but my calm
Won't be ruined by the likes of you.
And he melted before my eyes,
Before my eyes he dissolved into dust,
Because I was indifferent.
