Vladislav Khodasevich
Amidst a smoking desolation...

Amidst a smoking desolation,
The worker, fist raised threateningly,
In fear and angry desperation
Confronts his cunning enemy.

While, trusting to a crowd of feckless
Hands to guard the wealth he makes,
As stubborn as a stone, but reckless,
The bourgeois rages, too, and shakes.

No parliamentary debating
Will ever bridge this angry gap.
Once more we’ll find ourselves translating
The fight to Europe’s tattered map.

And on this landslide of disaster
The poet and historian gaze.
Its fearful progress, hourly faster,
Dispassionately they appraise.

There was a time when they anointed
With praise or blame all wars and pacts.
The Muses, sadly disappointed,
Reminded them of these rash acts.

Now they command two rules restrict us
When we record the gain and cost:
One — never glorify the victors.
Two — never pity those who lost.

Бывало, славили они;
