Panmongolism

Panmongolism! The word’s barbaric,
Yet still falls sweetly on my ear,
As if it were a mighty portent
Of God’s great destiny for man.

When, in Byzantium’s corruption,
The sacred altars’ fire grew cold,
And the Messiah was abjured
By priest and people, prince and tsar,

Then from the East by it was summoned
A people alien and unknown,
And under destiny’s dread weapon
There fell in dust the second Rome.

We do not wish to learn the lesson
Of how Byzantium fell, and why,
And Russia’s adulators tell her:
You’re Rome the third, you’re Rome the third.1

So be it! God, for our chastisement,
Has still an instrument in store.
And new assaults are being mounted
By swarms of fresh, awakening tribes.

From Altai to Malayan waters
The leaders of the Eastern isles
Beside the walls of wilting China
Have gathered multitudes of troops.

Like locust herds which can’t be counted,
And as insatiable with greed.
By an unearthly power guarded.
The tribes are moving to the north.

Forget your erstwhile glory, Russia!
The double eagle has been crushed.
Your tattered banners’ rags are given
To yellow children for their games.

He who forgets about love’s precept
In fear and trembling must yield.
And now the third Rome lies in ashes,
And Rome the fourth can never be.

1. After the capture of Constantinople (Byzantium), the “second Rome,” by the Turks in 1453, Moscow became a center of the Orthodox Church and thought of itself as the “third Rome,” which should never perish.
