The woman of Pompeii

“These were my husbands: first — a wealthy merchant,
Second — a poet, third — a wretched mime,
A consul — fourth, and now my fifth — this eunuch
Whom Caesar did himself appoint as mine.

“He loved me, did the Emperor, great Caesar.
The man I loved though was a Nubian slave.
My tomb will bear no ‘casta et pudica’*
To men too readily myself I gave.

“But you, my friend — to you, my bashful Mysian,
Am I forever, yes, forever bound.
Think not, my child, all women are perfidious:
Among them one true woman you have found!”

Thus spake the matron Lydia, scarce breathing.
As in a troubled dream, her features paled
And she forgot Pompeii was all seething
As heavenward Vesuvius flame exhaled.

But when the lovers lay still without dreaming
And by remorseless sleep were overcome,
Down on the town clouds of grey dust came streaming.
To ashen burial did the town succumb.

Ages have passed; as from some wild beast’s gullet
The past we have extracted from the earth.
Two bodies in embrace we have uncovered,
A symbol of undying passion’s worth.

Raise here a lofty monument, comprising
Eternal bodies cast in lifelike form,
The hallowed memory immortalising
Of passion that has overstepped the bourne!

Матрона Лидия, как в смутном сне;
