The circus

The circus shines, like a shield,
Finger trills, moodily Pipes, unites folk!
Gentle, small-faced, a girl,
Spanish-looking, with flowers in her hair,
Radiant as an angel, whirls,
Waltzes a Cossack dance.
Like a white seabird
She stands in the thick smoke,
Then, her guitar across her shoulder,
Flutters, shuffling her feet.
Alone, suddenly she whistles,
Coils up like a snake,
And flies off again, gently moaning,
A vision of beauty and half-naked!
But now clothes hang In uneasy folds about her body.
Too late though.
The gentle arrangement of her limbs
Has had its effect on everyone.

The crowd rises, breathing hard like cobbles,
Foaming floridly at the mouth.
Some, even the most godless,
Are filled with a strange virulence.
Others, stuffing tobacco in their empty pipes,
Licking their chops, mentally embrace
The little pigeon that flits before them.
Radiant! She would not stay!

A howl goes up, and everyone
Is filled with a black, black spirit.
But the music breaks out again
And again all are amazed.
A white horse enters the ring,
Turning its pale narrow face from side to side.
And on it, in front of all these folk,
Is seated a sturdy child.
Now, with a single motion of the hands,
Laughing, the child sits facing them,
Then suddenly twisting his stubby legs,
Is seated back to front.
And the horse, dipping its beplumed
And lofty brow, like a sentinel,
Gallops haughtily around the ring
Lifting its limbs at an angle.

Once again, there’s general amazement —
Approbation, applause;
And envy, like a beast, gnaws
Those who not long before
Were smiling or seemed not to care.

A lad, subduedly playing pranks with
His girlfriend, hugs her close,
And whispers in her ear,
“It’s like a Turkish bath in here.”
She’s used to it, she sits
Unresisting, not uttering a word;
Obedient to nature’s law,
She has matrimony in view.

But again the ring is jumping,
The show resumes its course.
Two lean fellows, stooping,
Stand next to a pole.
One, raising his hands high,
Climbs slowly up into the air,
Releases a red balloon,
Drops down, spic and span,
And with his slender feet athwart
His comrades’ shoulders, stands.
Next, laughing dangerously,
They crawl upwards in unison,
And there, embracing casually,
Step onto the solid air.
They strengthen the twofold
Body’s equipoise with their breath,
But soon are flying again,
Streaming in the air.

In raptures, the audience again
Convulses hysterically And drums the floor,
Regardless of the din.
A gray-haired intellectual,
Speaking to another, says:
“This is a carnival
I attend not without profit.
Here I find acrobatics,
Pretty girls with rosy limbs,
Horses scientifically trained.
It’s not a circus—it’s sheer magic!”
The other, his head bald as his knee,
Says: “Quite so. I do agree.”

The snake-woman comes last,
Her act fills the crowd with awe.
Coiling her limbs, she squirms
Diligently in the straw.
She squirms thus for a few minutes,
Until her body vanishes quite.
Attendants fuss about.
“Where is she? Where?
The lady’s flown, right out of sight!”

The horror grips the audience,
All grab their hats And rush outside
With armfuls of wenches.
“Thieves! Thieves!” they cry.
But thieves aren’t to be seen.
That evening they are entertaining
Their friends at the Flea Market.
The sky above them is pitted, rough
With a merry double-barreled swearing,
And life, jabbering, like a trough,
Scuds along upside down.
