Nocturnal garden

O nocturnal garden, secret organ.
Forest of long trumpets, refuge of cellos!
O nocturnal garden, sad procession
Of motionless firs and oaks without voice!

All day there was rushing and noise, the poplars —
A shock, the oaks — a turmoil. One hundred
Thousand leaves like one hundred thousand bodies
Entangled in the autumn wind.

An August made of iron in tall boots,
His plate piled with game, stood far away
And the meadows were filled with the thunder of shots
And birds' bodies fluttered in the air.

The garden was still, and suddenly the moon
Appeared. Below, long shadows lay in tens
And crowds of linden trees raised their hands,
Hiding birds beneath clusters of green.

O nocturnal garden, poor nocturnal
Garden, o things asleep for a long time!
O the flaring just above the gaze,
A starry fragment s momentary flame.
