From "Sibyl"
3.
Sibyl to the Infant:
Child, cling
To my breast:
Birth is a falling into days.
From the nowhere cliffs beyond the clouds,
My infant,
How low you fell!
You were spirit, you became dust.
Cry, o little one, for them and for us:
Birth is a falling into hours!
Cry, o little one, in the future and again:
Birth is a falling into blood,
Both into dust,
And into hours...
Where are the glowings of his miracles?
Cry, little one: birth into weight!
Where are the ores of his generosities?
Cry, o little one: birth into numbers.
Born into blood,
And sweat...
But you will arise! That, which in the world is called
Death, is a falling into the firmament.
But you will behold! That, which in the world is
The closing of eyelids is birth into light.
From now
To eternity.
Death, o little one, is not to sleep, but to rise,
Not to sleep, but to return.
Swim, o little one! Already the step
Is left behind...
— A rising up into the day.
3
